Studies on the incidence of main Psychosis in Korean farmers


Abstract
The author have studied on the incidence of main psychosis at a village in Seo-San, Choong-Nam, Korea during august 1 to august 20, 1960 and the results are as follows.
1. Here, 11 cases of schisophrenia, 1 case of manic-depressive reaction, 8 cases of epilepsy and none of general paresis were obtained with diagnosis from the total residents by population-research method.
2. The general incidence percentages were calulated from the above results. That is ; 0.33 % for all four psychosis, 0.18% for schisophrenia, 0.02% for manic-depressive reaction and 0.13% for epilepsy.
3. The adjusted incidence percentages calulated by using the simple method of Weinberg are 0.50% or 0.72% On schisophrenia, 0.05% On manic-depressive reaction and 0.20% on epilepsy.
4. The various statistical studies on the cases are like the following details.
1) The age of onset for schisophrenia patients are distributed mostly in the range of age group from 16 to 30, which is usually higher than that of epilepsy.
2) The duration of illnesses are more than 5 or 10 years in the one half or more of the cases.
3) It seems that the psychotic patients in their family history were recognized about one fourth of all cases, and it was found that the types of ailments, the same or not, were equal in number.
4) Only 3 cases of schizophrenia have had the the psychotic premorbid character.
5) The asthenic body type is mostly prevail to the schizophrenia patients.
6) The schooling degree of the patients are poor enough, thereon, we are prefer to say that this is related to the general circumstances of the dwellers,
7) It seems there are not any differences to the number of the psychotic patients between a believer and an unbeliever.
5. Therefore, the author dare to says to take these results with the studies on the incidence of main psychosis for the Korean farmers, on account for their living manners and circumstances of this survey area.
